Who is a Companion

Who is a Companion?

The role of Companion is critical to the Seasons process. An effective Companion is a person who:

 can listen effectively

can relate well to the age group he/she is companioning

has the ability to deal with their own feelings around loss

 is able to facilitate discussion

has knowledge of child protection procedures and has been police checked

 has a sense of humour

wants to support children and young people to understand and accept their grief

This can be a teacher, psychologist, nurse, counsellor, social worker or others working with young people in statutory or voluntary sectors.

Do Companions need training?

Yes! Companions need the principles, skills and techniques offered through the 10 hour Companion training so that they are fully aware of the possibilities and limitations of their role. For further information about training please contact The Notre Dame Centre. (Only trained Companions can order and use Seasons for Growth materials.)
